Why Loadshedding Should Shape Every Security Decision in Zimbabwe

Ask most installers about backup power and you'll get a nod and a vague promise. Ask them to show you the design for it, and the conversation usually gets shorter.

That gap is the difference between a security system that looks complete on the quote and one that actually works when the power's been off for six hours.

The assumption baked into most systems

Most security equipment sold in Zimbabwe wasn't designed with Zimbabwe in mind. CCTV recorders, alarm panels, access control units and gate motors are largely built for markets where mains power is a safe assumption — because in most of the world, it is.

Installed as-is, that assumption quietly becomes part of your system. Everything works perfectly in the demo, and then fails exactly when the grid does — which, statistically, is often.

Why "it has a battery" isn't the same as "it's designed for this"

A lot of systems technically have some backup — a small battery in the alarm panel, perhaps. That's not the same as a system engineered around your area's actual outage pattern. A battery sized for a 30-minute grid blip does very little during a longer scheduled outage.

The right question isn't "does it have backup power" — it's "how long does that backup actually last, and does it cover every part of the system, or just one component while the rest goes dark?"

What designing around it actually looks like

In practice, this means treating backup power as a design decision made at the start of a project, not an accessory added at the end. It means sizing battery capacity to your area's typical outage length rather than a generic default. And it means making sure every component that needs to stay up — recorder, cameras, network, control panel — actually does, rather than leaving one weak link that takes the whole system down with it.

The real cost of skipping it

Retrofitting proper backup power after installation almost always costs more than including it from the start — new wiring, different equipment placement, sometimes a full re-installation. The cheap quote that skips it isn't actually cheaper once you account for that, and it leaves you with gaps in exactly the hours you're most exposed.
